Khurafat

Dear Diary,

Influenced by good reviews in newspapers and good comments in Facebook, I sweet-talked Hubby to go out for a movie. He immediately agreed as he loves horror movie. I thought it would be just the two of us but Hubby came back with three tickets. Abang Imran had successfully convinced his father to bring him along. Baru je berangan nak dating, dah ada yang mengikut.

Khurafat has all recipes of a good horror movie. First horror movie by director Syamsul Datuk Yusof Haslam, Khurafat is a story about a couple Johan (Syamsul, Mr. Director himself) and Aishah (Liyana Jasmay) who just got married. Their blissful married life was disturbed when they started to experience weird and scary encounters. Before settling down with Aishah, Johan has a girlfriend Anna (Sabrina Ali) who is a social girl. Johan ended his relationship with Anna when she does not want to change her lifestyle. Anna couldn’t accept the fact that Johan left her for Aishah and killed herself. This is when the audience’s anticipation heightened and the pace picked up.

From the beginning of the film, viewers are left wondering who the culprit is behind all the incidents that happened. I myself kept on guessing. With all the suspense scenes, I could hardly breathe. At one point, Imran became afraid and wanted to go home. I had to watch most of the movie with my hands covering Imran’s eyes and hugging him. Tu la nak ikut sangat tengok cite hantu!

Khurafat has an unexpected ending; in fact, a good twist for an ending in my opinion. Love conquers all! People who are insanely in love would do unthinkable stuffs. Things they wouldn’t do in normal circumstances. Love is not blind but people who are in love are the ones who are blind. This movie also conveys what goes around comes around. Everything happens for a reason. We as humans must redha with whatever happens to us and don’t tempt fate, don’t ever play with devil (syaitan) or khurafat beliefs.

There are a few illogical scenes though. For example, scenes at the hospital are so dim. Hospitals have lights and are supposed to be bright. Despite minor flaws here and there, I love this movie. For a Malay horror movie, it is laudable especially its effort to send a good message to the public. Good job Syamsul!!
