I am not a hardcore fan of nasi kandar but once in a blue moon I do feel the urge to pekena this special Northern dish. My craving is for the original nasi kandar not the copycat ones which can be found everywhere nowadays. Whenever there is a mamak restaurant, more often than not it will profess serving the so called nasi kandar when in reality what they serve is nothing compared to the original stuffs. Well, different people, different taste buds, different perspectives.
The shop
The tauke
For many Kedahans (especially oghang Aloq Setaq), we’re spoiled with choices. There are Yasmeen, Nasi Ali, Pokok Ceri and there is Nasi Royal. One of the nasi kandar places that I like is Nasi Royal (the original shop). The address is Kedai Kopi Dan Makanan Kim Bee Chew, 8, Jalan Tunku Ibrahim, Alor Setar, Kedah. It’s a Chinese coffee shop and the mamak puts up a nasi kandar stall there.
Us enjoying Nasi Royal
Combination of kuah manis & kuah pedas
Kuah dhal
For me, combination of several types of gravies (kuah manis, kuah pedas & kuah dhal) gives the extra edge to nasi kandar. The rule of thumb is you must get the right combination then you’ll get the right taste. Even what type of lauk you choose influence what gravy mixes to create the right combination. I usually let the mamak in charge to choose which gravies should go onto my rice because I believe they know best.

Kak Zue - Salam perkenalan. Memang banyak nasi lemak royal tp kebanyakannya pakai nama ja. Saya penah try kat tempat lain tp rasa tak sama. Yg saya tau sejak kecik yg ori yg kat Jln Tunku Ibrahim tu la. Kedai dia depan Alor Ria.
Ermayum - Camne ek nak cakap. Tah la Eda. Tak pandai nak explain la. Kena rasa sendiri then you can differentiate.
