Dear Diary,
As we were driving towards Gopeng exit, I noticed Kellie’s
Castle signboard. It must be somewhere around there. As convincingly as I could
be, I pleaded my case with Hubby. Even the kids joined me and begged their
Abah. We wanted to do some sightseeing before continuing our journey home.
At first, Hubby was quite reluctant but after relentless
pleadings from us he finally gave in. Yea!!! We got to go to Kellie’s Castle.
Well, that’s the nearest tourist spot to our route and that’s where we visited.
A bit of info on Kellie’s Castle taken from Wikipedia and
Perak.info:
Kellie’s castle, a popular tourist attraction, is located
near Batu Gajah. Owned by William Kellie-Smith, it was initially built to
celebrate a new family member, a long awaited son and heir. The unfinished
mansion was never meant to realize all its owner’s dreams. Sadly, Kellie-Smith
died before his castle’s construction completed. It was also one of the settings
for film Anna and the King.
The remains of the castle still stand erected till today.
From what I saw and gathered, Kellie’s Castle would have been one huge mansion
with many areas cater for specific tasks/events. Its complete structure would
surpass any building in that era.
It was a good exercise for all of us since we sweat a lot in
the course of exploring the castle.
